Synopsis:
Annie’s been chosen as her life-long best friends maid of honour, but while she and an eclectic bunch of bridesmaids have a wild ride on the way to the wedding, her personal life is falling apart.
Calling Bridesmaids the female Hangover is actually doing it quite a disservice. It will unfortunately draw these comparisons due to its untimely release alongside the Hangover Part II, and ultimately it could have had a much more successful box office if it had been released at a different time where it might have scored a larger and more diverse demographic. The problem with firstly calling it the female Hangover, and secondly releasing it at the same time as the Hangover Part II, is that it ultimately loses out financially as audiences are shared between the two. And actually there’s more than just a little something in this film for men too, but the advertising has done little to illustrate this and effectively alienated a potential audience source. Yes, there are plenty of jokes at the expense of the male of the species as you might expect, but there is plenty of gross out humour as well you probably wouldn’t. It’s better and funnier than the Hanover Part II, and actually has little in common with it besides the fact both are set around a marriage. Bridesmaids actually has more in common with the Freaks and Geeks stall of comedies and I’m not surprised to see Judd Apatow involved as producer. The characters are funny and well portrayed, with Melissa McCarthy providing a lot of the laughs, while Kirsten Wiig has moved seamlessly from co-star to solo lead and the great word of mouth she’s received as a result should ensure she’s now a Hollywood go-to.
With a lot of comedy movies, the best and funniest bits are all in the trailer, and the audience is left somewhat under whelmed and flat when they realise it. However, that isn’t the case with Bridesmaids, the trailer is actually a fair reflection of the comedy in the film, there’s plenty to keep you smiling the whole way through and the comedy never really wanes. Even the poo jokes are funny.
