Crazy Stupid Love

Synopsis:
Crazy stupid love is the story of Carl (Steve Carrell) who has recently been rejected by his wife, who is having an affair with her co-worker. Jacob (Ryan Gosling) is a ladies man who takes Carl under his alpha male wing, in order for Carl to have more success with women. His son is in love with the babysitter and Emma Stone pops up now and then.

CSL is an easy watching romantic comedy. Carrell has cornered the market of the middle aged bemused buffoon that he plays with ease. This is the first time Gosling has done comedy, it shows he can be versatile and look good in a nice suit, by doing a mainstream film in addition to the likes of Blue Valentine and the upcoming Drive. Everyone else however while playing reasonably likeable characters don’t really have a lot to do, Marisa Tomei and Kevin Bacon feel especially under used. A couple of jokes are funny, one gag involving dirty dancing in particular.

CSL offers a change from the large amount of adult comedies this year, a tad too long, but otherwise ticks all the rom-com boxes, without adding anything new.
